Документ ЭТ состоит из ячеек, сформированных пересечением строк и колонок. Каждая ячейка может содержать текст, дату, числовые данные или формулу, использующую значения из других ячеек. Ячейкам для удобства работы могут быть присвоены имена, называемые метками. Вычисления в таблице производятся автоматически по мере ввода данных в ячейки. Для облегчения расчётов ЭТ имеет большой набор встроенных функций, средства создания макросов и встроенный язык программирования. Наиболее распространённые ЭТ: Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Quattro Pro.
